Myanmar Program - 2010In October 2010, IMPACTO PROJECT traveled to Myanmar (Burma) where we were fortunate enough to carry out our 3rd program (and our first program in Asia!) at a deaf school and orphanage. Through our first IndieGoGo fundraising campaign in September 2010, we successfully raised enough funds to bring the program into Burma to teach photography to 16 hearing impaired students. The 10-day program was supported in part by the US Embassy in Myanmar. Many of our participants had never used a digital camera before and had apprehensions. However, with the assistance of an English-to-Burmese sign language interpreter, this trepidation quickly dissolved and they proceeded to enthusiastically capture their surroundings and everyday life on camera. The result was an incredible set of photographs which, sponsored by the US Embassy, were displayed at an exhibit on the last day of the program which featured an opening ceremony and reception. It was widely attended by parents, friends, teachers and of course, our participants, who lit up the room with their radiant and prideful smiles. We were even written up in the local paper! |
